Flower Fundraising Ceremonies – Bon Phkar Brak
In working with communities to improve their lower secondary schools, fundraising by the community is a key activity. It’s part of TLC’s approach to building sustainability and self sufficiency at the local level. While we teach communities how to write proposals and seek funding, we love that the colorful Cambodian tradition of Bon Phkar Brak is still a popular way for villages to raise money for their schools and pagodas. In communities like Chann Sar, Run Ta Ek and Krabei Riel hundreds of community members walk and ride through their villages to raise money for their schools. This year Chann Sar raised over $900 and Krabei Riel raised over $2000! These festive and fun occasions are also a testament to the strength of community ties when supporting education is a priority for all.
